What is the definition of metaphysics?
What is Metaphysics?
If you or someone you know has ever asked, “What is metaphysics?” here is our in-depth response.
– Metaphysics is a branch of philosophy that studies the ultimate nature of existence, reality, and experience without being bound to any one theological doctrine or dogma.
– Metaphysics acknowledges and respects the beauty in ALL of God’s Creation.
– Metaphysics is religion without dogma.
– Metaphysics does not explore religious beliefs and laws created by man, but rather, it explores the immutable laws of nature, set by The Creator, God, in the creation of the Universe.
– Metaphysics includes all religions but transcends them all.
– Metaphysics is the study of ultimate cause in the Universe.
– Metaphysics is the only science capable of inquiring beyond physical and human science.
In academic universities, metaphysics is taught under the subject speculative philosophy. At our non- secular, spiritually focused universities, we see metaphysics as the search for truth, purpose, and meaning in life, which we believe can be found through spiritual introspection and personal experiences (such as mindfulness meditation).
In a more absolute sense, we like to think of metaphysics as dealing with the basic questions of life asked by anyone who has truly paused to reflect on our earthly existence—whether, for example, there is a meaning or purpose to life; whether there are universal truths that can be found or proven; whether God exists; whether humans have a soul, and if so, why; whether pain and loneliness are inevitable in life; whether one can truly find the way to happiness.
We teach metaphysics based on Dr. Masters’ spiritual-psychology consciousness research conducted over decades. The International Metaphysical Ministry honors all religions, spiritual paths, faiths, and beliefs.

What is the University of Metaphysics history?
Initially established in 1959 as the Institute of Parapsychology in Beverly Hills, California, by Dr. Paul Leon Masters, the University of Metaphysics and the University of Sedona are private, postsecondary, distance-learning theological schools operating under the auspices of the International Metaphysical Ministry. The International Metaphysical Ministry is a non-profit, religious, exempt organization as designated by the Internal Revenue Service of the United States. The curriculum of both Universities is strictly non-secular and theological in nature in the holistic, new thought, transcendent, transpersonal, and mystical branches of metaphysical theology.
Both the University of Metaphysics and the University of Sedona have a history of a curriculum that has been evolving for over six decades. Today, each university stands alone as an independent entity. Under the guidance and leadership of Dr. Paul Leon Masters, the University of Metaphysics applied for and was granted the legal right to award non-secular degrees up to the doctoral level in 1976. In 2003, the University of Sedona began operating under the same legal right in the State of Arizona.
What experience does your organization have?
Dr. Masters, Founder of the International Metaphysical Ministry University System, which includes the University of Metaphysics and the University of Sedona, completed over six decades of research and teaching in practically all phases of metaphysics from A to Z––alchemy and astrology to Zen and Zoroastrianism. His loyal and capable staff is continuing his legacy.
To date, the University System has 18,000 graduates who serve as ministers, teachers, metaphysical counselors, and holistic life coaches in over 125 countries. Many of them have several doctoral degrees from the University and others are expanding their metaphysical studies through graduate-level Continuing Education classes offered by the University.
What makes you different from other Metaphysical schools?
Our roots can be traced back to 1959. The University of Metaphysics and University of Sedona together make up the world’s largest metaphysical degree-granting, distance-learning universities, with an ever-expanding curriculum based on decades of consciousness research with thousands of students and graduates located in over 125 countries.
You are not alone: Unlike some distance-learning metaphysics schools, we have a highly capable staff available to answer any questions that arise as you work your way through the course material. In addition, each master’s and doctoral student is assigned a thesis and/or dissertation advisor to help you write the best research paper you are capable of, to motivate you, to keep you up-to-date with the latest student tools, to address any concerns you may have, and to help you navigate the system.
In addition, our metaphysical university is a non-profit 501c3, which means we aren’t in it for the money. Our goal is to provide affordable education in advanced holistic, new thought metaphysics, as well as transpersonal, transcendent, and theocentric metaphysical forms of spirituality to anyone interested in pursuing a higher education degree in metaphysics while learning higher spiritual truths.
Does your organization have a long-standing reputation?
The International Metaphysical Ministry University System enjoys an unblemished history of over half a century
Does the organization reflect integrity?
Our intention has always been to bring further legitimacy to the metaphysical field to ensure that higher metaphysical education and metaphysical spirituality gain further acceptance in the world.
Do I have to attend a campus?
All our programs are distance learning, which you complete from the comfort of your home. You have the flexibility and freedom to structure your studies according to your life commitments and circumstances. You can choose to study with downloadable electronic materials (no extra fee) or hard-copy materials (additional fee).
Why do you have two universities in your system?
We offer doctoral degrees through both the University of Sedona and the University of Metaphysics for three reasons. First, our Doctor of Philosophy, Ph.D. program is offered through the University of Sedona and the University of Metaphysics. Second, some students live in communities or parts of the world where the word metaphysics is not understood or accepted. Third, some students prefer “metaphysics” on their diploma because it establishes them as an expert in their field.
Do the universities offer a successful, relevant spiritual education?
Our University System has more ordained metaphysical ministers and metaphysical practitioners than any metaphysical college in the world.
What is the size of the University?
Our University System has 18,000 graduates who serve as ministers, teachers, metaphysical counselors, holistic life coaches, and metaphysical healing specialists in over 125 countries.
How many graduates do you have?
There are over 18,000 graduates in 125 countries worldwide.
